Self-catering 'Key' symbols

key The key symbols are awarded by the English Tourist Board and indicate the level of facilities available. These are:
key Clean and comfortable accommodation with cooker (including oven and grill), fridge, TV, adequate table and seating provision, full inventory of crockery, cutlery and equipment.
keykey As for one key, plus: colour TV, automatic electric kettle, easy chair seating, electrical shaver point or adaptor.
keykeykey As for two keys, plus: the unit will be self-contained, vacuum cleaner, ironing facilities, linen and towels provided free or for hire.
keykeykeykey As for 3 keys, plus: washing machine and tumble dryer available, garden furniture where there is a patio or garden, coffee maker.

National Accessible Scheme

nas1 Category 1

Accessible to a wheelchair user traveling independently.
nas2 Category 2

Accessible to a wheelchair user traveling with assistance.
nas3 Category 3

Accessible to someone with limited mobility, able to walk a few paces and up to a maximum of three steps.

WHAT DO THE TOURIST BOARDS CHECK:
(Hotels, Guesthouses, Inns, B&Bs and Farmhouses)
Wherever the symbol is displayed:

  • A public entrance must be accessible from a setting down or car parking point.
  • Where there is a car park, a re-servable parking space should be available on request. For Category I, the re-servable space must have a minimum width of 3.6 meters.
  • The route from the parking point or space to the entrance must be sound and free from obstacles. For Category I, the approach must be level or ramped. For Category 2, no more than 1 step at any one point and for Category 3, no more than 3 steps at any one point.

Within the building:

  • At least one bedroom must be accessible to a wheelchair user.
  • Where there is a restaurant or dining room, lounge, TV lounge (unless TV is provided in the bedroom) and bar, at least one of each must be accessible.
  • Within the restaurant or dining room, for Categories 1 and 2 there must be an adequate clear under space.
  • Doors to be accessible, rooms must have clear openings sufficiently wide.
  • For Category 1, all approaches must be level or ramped. For Category 2 there must be no more than 1 step at any one point and for Category 3, no more than three.
  • Lifts, where required to be used, must be large enough to hold a wheelchair and, for Category 1, must have automatic doors and controls in reach.

Within the bedroom:

  • For Category 1 and 2 there must be unobstructed, clear space of not less than • 1100mm x 700mm and a space of not less than 800mm alongside at least one side of the bed for lateral transfer.
  • For Category 1 the bed must be of suitable height, • and door handles, light switches, TV controls, etc must be accessible.

Within the bathroom:

  • The accessible bathroom and WC must be en suite or on the same floor as the bedroom. For Categories 1 and 2 there must be clear space of not less than 1100mm x 700mm and a lateral transfer space to each of not less than 800mm, with suitable support rails.

Within the kitchen:

  • For Category 1, the work surfaces, cooker, cupboards and all controls must be accessible.
